Handi-Bus Service

The Saint John Transit Commission currently has 5 HandiBuses on the road plus 1 bus for backup. These buses are operated by Independence Plus, Inc., a non-profit charitable organization. Within a three year timeframe, ridership of the HandiBus service increased by 67%. Handi-Bus FAQ

Who can use the Handi-Bus service?
This service is available to residents of the City of Saint John who have various mobility issues and who cannot use the public transit system.

Will the driver wait for me if I’m running late?
Please be ready 5 minutes before your scheduled pick up. Drivers can only wait for 3 minutes.

Can the driver help me get on the bus?
Drivers can’t enter the residence of passengers or assist in carrying wheelchairs. Handi-Bus passengers requiring assistance should make arrangements with an attendant prior to their pickup to ensure they can get onto the bus safely.

What can I do to make sure my pickup goes as smoothly as possible?
In addition to having an attendant, if you require one, please make sure your driveway and sidewalk is clear of debris, snow or ice to avoid injury to yourself or the driver. Passengers should also have their bus pass or exact change ready before boarding.

What if I need to cancel a pickup?
Please inform the dispatcher of all cancellations at least 30 minutes before your scheduled pickup. Failure to cancel or being late will result in a full fee charge to the passenger. Failure to cancel will be considered a ‘no show’. After 3 ‘no shows’, passengers may be suspended from using the Handi-Bus service.

Regularly scheduled passengers who will not require service for a period of time must call one week in advance to reschedule.

Can I bring a pet on the bus?
Only seeing eyes dogs are permitted on the bus and they must be on a leash.

How much will it cost for an attendant to travel with me?
There is no charge for an attendant traveling with the passenger.

What if there is a disruption to Handi-Bus service?
Should the Handi-Bus experience a breakdown, priority will be given to wheelchair users attending work, school or medical appointments.

Can I smoke on the Handi-Bus?
There is no smoking on the Handi-Bus.
