Growth In Saint John
Saint John, New Brunswick is a growing, medium-sized regional centre located at the confluence of the St. John and Kennebecasis Rivers. In 2004, Saint John was named “Atlantic Canada’s Fastest Growing City ” by the Conference Board of Canada.
Canada’s oldest incorporated city is vibrant with an increasingly multicultural population and a dynamic, diverse business community. The in-city population is estimated at 70,000, with a daytime population of approximately 122,000 drawing from communities all around the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) - Rothesay, Quispamsis, Grand Bay-Westfield, Hampton and St. Martins.
Currently, the city and region are experiencing tremendous growth and development.
Organizations such as the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership, Enterprise Saint John (the city’s economic development agency) and Uptown Saint John are spearheading development in the Uptown core. Support systems and infrastructure such as public transit will be essential in sustaining growth in surrounding areas.
The projected growth in all areas of Saint John and its surrounding municipalities will result in an increase in commuter traffic. And as the cost of gas continues to increase, transportation alternatives must be made available to commuters.
